My current research examines security apparatus behaviour during revolutionary contention. I do this by examining the manner in which the institutional design and historical evolution of the state's security forces lead these forces to become either more or less integrated or isolated from society, and more or less instrumental or independent from the state. I then examine how different pre-existing civil-military relationships affect the manner and extent to which the security forces are able to independent respond to contingent factors during an incidence of military arbitration of revolutionary contention between a regime an opposition movement. This research hopes to serve as a guide to assist protest movements in selecting appropriate tactical strategies which will minimize personal and organizational risk while maximizing organization effectiveness and realization of organization goals. It can also assist democratic and transitioning states in selecting appropriate institutional designs for their security forces which can simultaneously enable mission effectiveness and democratic control.
